This tool will let you create an HFS disk image without having to resort to installing system-wide extensions like FUSE. Usage is pretty simple; you just launch the app, choose a file or folder, then choose a filename for the disk image. Alternatively, you can just drag-and-drop a file or folder onto the app and it will make a disk image from it. Overview

OSFMount allows you to mount local disk image files (bit-for-bit copies of an entire disk or disk partition) in Windows as a physical disk or a logical drive letter. You can then analyze the disk image file with PassMark OSForensics™ by using the physical disk name (eg. .PhysicalDrive1) or logical drive letter (eg. Z:).

By default, the image files are mounted as read only so that the original image files are not altered.

OSFMount supports mounting disk image files as read/write in 'write cache' mode. This stores all writes to a 'write cache' (or 'delta') file which preserves the integriy of the original disk image file.

OSFMount also supports the creation of RAM disks, basically a disk mounted into RAM. This generally has a large speed benefit over using a hard disk. As such this is useful with applications requiring high speed disk access, such a database applications, games (such as game cache files) and browsers (cache files). A second benefit is security, as the disk contents are not stored on a physical hard disk (but rather in RAM) and on system shutdown the disk contents are not persistent. At the time of writing, we believe this is the fastest RAM drive software available.

OSFMount supports mounting images of CDs in .ISO format , which can be useful when a particular CD is used often and the speed of access is important.

Notes:

64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8, 10, & Server 2008 & 2012 are supported. For 32-bit Windows, please download OSFMount v2 below.

Known issues

#1: On certain Windows systems (mostly Windows server 2016), when using OSFMount, Windows will prevent the OSFMount driver from loading. See the following page for more details, 'Why do I get the error, Error loading OSFMount Driver?'

#2: If you get an Access Denied message during install for the osfmount.sys file, or OSFmount driver is disabled error. Reboot the machine and reinstall. A previous version of the driver was likely still loaded in memory, preventing an update.

RAM Drive Benchmarks

These RAM drive benchmarks were taken on a Intel i7-8700K CPU with 32GB RAM DDR4 PC4-19207 in dual channel mode. RAM disk size was 2GB, formatted with FAT32. Typical speeds with large linear blocks are around 10,000 MBytes/sec. With smaller 4K blocks and random access plus queue depth of 1, speed is still a very respectable 1,500 MByte/sec. Benchmarks were taken with PerformanceTest V9.

In order to make use of distutils a setup script must be created. This iscalled setup.py by convention, although it can have any name. It lookssomething like this:

The script is invoked as follows:

This command will create a subdirectory called build with a furthersubdirectory starting with the letters exe. and ending with the typicalidentifier for the platform that distutils uses. This allows for multipleplatforms to be built without conflicts.

On Windows, you can build a simple installer containing all the files cx_Freezeincludes for your application, by running the setup script as:

On Mac OS X, you can use bdist_dmg to build a Mac disk image.

distutils commands¶

cx_Freeze creates four new commands and subclasses four others in order toprovide the ability to both build and install executables. In typical distutilsfashion they can be provided in the setup script, on the command line or ina setup.cfg configuration file. They are described in further detail below.

build¶

This command is a standard command which has been modified by cx_Freeze tobuild any executables that are defined. The following options were added tothe standard set of options for the command:

install_exe¶

This command performs the work installing an executable or set of executables.It can be used directly but most often is used when building Windows installersor RPM packages. It can be further customized:

This command is a standard command which has been modified by cx_Freeze toensure that packages are created with the proper architecture for the platform.The standard command assumes that the package should be architectureindependent if it cannot find any extension modules.

bdist_mac¶

This command is available on Mac OS X systems, to create a Mac applicationbundle (a .app directory).

bdist_dmg¶

This command is available on Mac OS X systems; it creates an application bundle,then packages it into a DMG disk image suitable for distribution andinstallation.

The options for the build_exe command are the defaults for any executablesthat are created. The options for the Executable class allow specification ofthe values specific to a particular executable. The arguments to theconstructor are as follows:
